CUSTOM ACTION FIGURES:101 – Tutorial Tuesday – “Improving Rifle Shouldering”
By Rob Panick
In this week’s tutorial, we’ll learn how to modify your figure to allow it to better shoulder a rifle. Most of the time a stock action figure’s arms won’t move into position to let it hold a rifle in a realistic pose. With a little bit of modification, you can fairly easily fix this.
We’ll begin with a disassembled figure. For help disassembling your figure, check out my video tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf3V6Wxknyk
The main thing that prevents your figure from holding a rifle in a realistic pose is too much material at the front of the “armpit” area. You’ll need to remove some of the material in this area to let the arms move in closer together.
The best tool to use for this is a rotary grinder with a round “burr” bit. Grind out a small amount at a time, being careful to keep the same shape that the torso originally had.
Once you’ve ground out the proper amount of material to allow your figure’s arms to move forward enough, you’ll need to smooth out the area removed material from with some sandpaper. Use a medium grit paper to smooth the area and then a fine grit to give it the final finish.
Now when you reassemble the figure, the arms will be able to move into a realistic pose to hold a rifle. As I always suggest, it’s best to practice this on a “beater’ figure before you do it on a good figure, and remember practice makes perfect!
